Google, Google Scholar, and Considerations for Student Research

 

Searching the Internet has become both more efficient and more user friendly over the last 30 years. However, even if it has become easier to find pages, there is still no guarantee that the information on those pages is relevant, timely, or even true. 

The Internet is a megaphone for information, but that's not the same thing as being a megaphone for truth. For instance, rigorous, peer-reviewed studies show the safety and efficacy of vaccines, as well as the harmful societal effects of not vaccinating children against various diseases.

The Internet does not care.

Search engine results are not based on best practice, supporting evidence, or even adherence to the truth, so caveat emptor
