Galewood Gazette

The relationship between the Galewood neighborhood in the Austin community area and the Montclare neighborhood/community area.  The Galewood Gazette (http://galewood.net/gazette/) is a quarterly newspaper that focuses specifically on the Galewood neighborhood. As they express, this newspaper is “a collaboration between members of the Galewood Residents Organization, The GMCO, GMC Garden Club, Moms in Action, and the Sayre Playground Group.” The issues that are published are from Spring 2010 to Spring 2013. Student researchers might compare the Galewood Gazette with the Galewood-Montclare website to see what interests and concerns are in common and which are distinct.

The Garfield Park Conservatory offers an in-house respite of natural beauty; it also is a valuable resource for those with environmental concerns. National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture 

Like all National museums in the city, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture (http://nmprac.org  ) is free. Located in the Humboldt Park Stables, the museum explores Chicago’s Puerto Rican culture. Student researchers interested in exploring the Latino presence in Chicago would do well to visit this museum as well as other such cultural institutions listed in this guide.

Jane Addams Hull House Museum

The Jane Addams Hull House ( https://www.hullhousemuseum.org) is an obvious choice as a resource on the Near West Side with real Chicago history in terms of the settlement house movement and social services. While there is a small fee for visiting, students can learn quite a bit about the immigrant experience and Chicago’s social services history.

Independence Square Fountain

Located at Douglas and Independence Boulevard in North Lawndale, Independence Square holds a 1902 fountain that is one of Chicago’s celebrated public art pieces. Students exploring public art in Chicago would do well to explore this particular work as well.

K-Town Historic District Association

Though better known these days for violence and poverty, West Garfield Park has seen better days.  The K-Town Historic District Association hopes to highlight the historic homes and the historic events that occurred in West Garfield Park to drive renovation and development. Ukranian National Museum

Located at 2249 W. Superior Street, the Ukranian National Museum (ukraniannationalmuseum.org) focuses on the history, art, and culture of Ukranians as well as the experiences of Chicago’s Ukranian-Americans. While they have relatively limited hours and days of access, student researchers interested in the Eastern European presence in Chicago, including that of the Ukraine, would do well to visit this museum as well as the Polish Museum of America, which is also in West Town, and the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in West Lawn (Southwest Side).
