Get a Library Card

Getting a library card is easy—and it's free! Please visit any CPL location to fill out an application. You can also download an application and bring it to any CPL location.

If you are unable to come in person, please reach out to the Assistive Resource Center, who will aid you in getting a library card. You can call them at (312) 747-4001 or email them at artbc@chipublib.org.

Current, valid ID with name, photo and Chicago address is required to obtain a library card.

Temporary Access Library Card

Are you a Chicago resident who is still getting your documentation together? You can apply for a Temporary Access Library Card, offering access to select library resources while patrons gather the necessary documents to upgrade to a Full Access Library Card (standard card) within 90 days.

eCards

Beginning May 1, 2025, CPL will no longer issue eCards. Visit any CPL location to upgrade to a Full Access Library Card (standard card) or Temporary Access Library Card, depending on the identification you currently have.
