Religion is a major part of the human experience across the world and across time periods.

The study of religion takes many different forms. Some of it is theological, which is to say that it has to do with interpreting the precepts and texts of a particular religion, while some is sociological, or a look at how religion works in society. There are many more ways to study religion, from the philosophical to the historical, that are also represented in the field of religious studies.

Where can I find books on religion in the library?

Call number prefixes BL-BQ in the Library of Congress system correspond to books on religion. These books are available on the second floor of our library. There are books about all religions, about the philosophy of religions, about history, about theology, and more.

What resources are there for the study of religion online?

Perhaps the best resource for the beginner’s study of religion is the Gale Virtual Reference Library. This offers easy-to-understand articles about topics of all kinds and is available through the CCC library website.

For more advanced work in religious studies, start with JSTOR. JSTOR compiles humanities and social sciences resources – the most usual disciplines that engage in the study of religion. There is a wide variety of approaches to this study, and all are well represented. Oxford Academic also has many religion titles available.
