Library Access

The libraries serve current City Colleges of Chicago students, faculty, and staff. Patrons from I- Share libraries can visit CCC libraries and check out physical items. A current ID (meaning the holder is registered for a given term) is required to check out materials.

CCC students, faculty, and staff can use their username/password to access electronic resources (databases, eBooks, articles) from the library both on campus and off-campus.

CCC libraries are open to the public for in-library use of physical materials. Check library hours here.

Items can be requested and sent for pickup to the CCC library most convenient for patrons. Borrowed items can be returned to any CCC library. Patrons of other I-Share libraries can request materials to be sent for pickup at their library.

Borrowed items are not automatically renewed. Email notifications are sent three days before items are due asking patrons to manually renew or return items by the due date. Items can be renewed online, in person at a CCC library, or by telephone. Contact information for CCC libraries.

Borrowing privileges and off-campus access to electronic resources are not available to CCC alumni.

Lending/Circulation Policies (apply to students, faculty, and staff)

  • Loan period:
    • Print materials: initial loan of 28 days; 112 days (16 weeks) maximum loan period. Renewals are only possible when there are no other requests for the item. The final due date for students is always the last Friday of the term.
    • Non-print materials: initial loan of 14 days; 28 days (4 weeks) maximum loan period
    • Other items: loan periods may vary by library.
  • Late/overdue fines: no overdue or late fines will be applied, with the exception of fines for reserve (library-use only) materials. At 35 days past the due date items are marked as lost and patrons will be billed. If a lost item is returned, the lost fee will be removed from the patron’s account. Patrons are not billed for items lost by fire, flood, or theft; police reports or insurance claims must be provided.
  • Patrons are responsible for and will be billed for lost or damaged items. Patrons may replace the book in kind with a copy of the same or newer edition of the missing or damaged item, which is preferred (check with the lending library to get guidance on selecting the appropriate edition), or pay the replacement cost of an item (cost is determined by the lending library) at any CCC business office.
  • Fines for non-CCC interlibrary loans items are determined by the lending institution.
  • Reserve items (required textbooks or other materials for a given class) typically do not leave the library and circulate for two hours at a time, with renewals possible only if no one else is waiting for the item. Overdue fines may be applied to reserve items.
  • There is no limit on the number of items that can be checked out at a given time.
  • If a patron has three or more lost books on their account across all CCC libraries, they will be blocked from further borrowing until they have returned or replaced all the lost books.
  • Patrons will be given three “claims returned" items if they believe they returned a book, but it is not present in the library.
  • CCC faculty and staff should contact a CCC library to return an item that’s reached its maximum loan period. If there is no hold the item can be returned and checked out again.

Streaming Video Policy (applies to students, faculty, and staff)

Purpose

Provide streaming videos that support the curriculum and allow access to required viewing for CCC classes.

Collections

Academic Video Online (AVON): Defined yearly subscription of over 80,000 videos; we are not able to add content. Contains documentaries, clips, and titles from PBS, Sony Pictures Classics, Broadway on Demand, and many others.

Kanopy: Defined collection with the ability to request additional content. Contains independent films, documentaries, and some feature films.

Swank: Defined yearly subscription to the Top 1000 list of titles most requested by Swank’s academic customers. Links to these titles are provided on CCC’s Swank portal for instructors to place on Brightspace or otherwise share with students.

Additional Video Resources

Some CCC libraries maintain DVD collections and these titles can be searched in the online catalog. Depending on the item, you may be able to place a request to have it sent to your campus library for pick up.

Policy

Videos are available both on- and off-campus for current CCC students, faculty, and staff. You may be prompted to enter your CCC credentials (username and password) when accessing.

Public Performance Rights

Some of our streaming films have Public Performance Rights (PPR) and can be used for on-campus social events:

  • AVON: All titles (except for Film Platform) have PPR.
  • Kanopy: Selected titles have PPR. Look for a PPR icon or search for public performance rights to apply a filter that will return all PPR titles. See this help page for more information.
  • Swank: Titles cannot be used for public performances. This restriction applies to any group viewing outside the classroom.

Requests

Not all requested titles are available via AVON, Kanopy, or Swank. CCC libraries welcome instructor requests for physical media to support the curriculum and will attempt to fill all such requests, if possible. Please be aware that there are circumstances (e.g., licensing restrictions, budgetary concerns, etc.) that prevent us from purchasing requested items.

Swank: In addition to the 1000 titles available during a given academic year, there are a limited number of slots available for instructors to request titles not included in the Top 1000. Once these slots are filled, no more individual requests will be accepted. Preference for these requests is given for the following courses:

  1. Fine Arts (FIN ART) 104 (The World of the Cinema)
  2. Fine Arts (FIN ART) 109 (History of Cinema)
  3. Fine Arts (FIN ART) 114 (Film History I)
  4. Fine Arts (FIN ART) 115 (Film History II)
  5. Communication Media (CMMEDIA) 163 (Film Rhetoric)
  6. Literature (LIT) 155 (Literature and Film)

Kanopy: If you find a video in Kanopy that CCC does not currently have access to, please click the “Request Access” option that appears on the video’s title card to complete the form. See this page for more information. Both instructors and students can request access.

Effective 2024, the "Suggest a film" option to ask Kanopy to add a video that is not in the current collection is no longer available.
