What are Government Documents, aka GovDocs?
Government documents are information sources produced by governments at any level; they may include laws, regulations, statistics, technical information, maps, and materials in other formats. This information is freely available online through a number of resources, as well as in archives, public, state, and university libraries, and federal depository libraries (congressionally designated depositories for U.S. Government documents) within other libraries across the country.
There are several federal depository libraries in and near Chicago. The most convenient to us is the Harold Washington Library Center, just on the other side of the Loop. The Government Information department is located on the 5th Floor. Public access to the government documents collection, including Congressional publications, Executive Branch documents, statistics, maps, and Illinois documents, is guaranteed by public law (Title 44 United States Code).
