The People in the Castle is a compilation of short stories by Joan Aiken written in a whimsical style that transports the reader to a new world with each chapter. In "A Room Full of Leaves", Wil makes friends with a strange child who lives in an unchartered wing of the mansion he shares with his relatives. "She Was Afraid of Upstairs" follows young Tessie, a girl with an indescribable foreboding that takes a toll on her everyday life. Aiken’s sense of humor and eccentricity make this read one of my recent favorites. -- Bri McIntire, College Library Assistant
