Calling All Math Faculty and Tutors!

The HWC Math Department has teamed up with the Library to create a new resource for students: The HWC Math Survival Guide. The guide will be an open educational resource (OER) featuring tutorials for the trickiest concepts in every course. Through a grant made possible by Senator Richard Durbin’s office, we are offering special assignments to find and create tutorials. Contact Todd Heldt or Chris Sabino for more information.

Shelf Talker

My Brilliant Friend is the first of a 4 volume series by Elena Ferrante about Elena Greco and Lila Cherullo, two girls who grow up in Naples, Italy immediately following World War II. Over the course of 60 years, their deep, sometimes fraught friendship endures poverty, jealousy, sexism, and the turbulent years of Italy’s Years of Lead. Both girls grow up in poverty and both are very intelligent, but Elena is given the opportunity to go to school while Lila is not – this point of divergence affects every aspect of their existence over the remainder of their lives.  Ferrante’s writing is gripping, brutal, and always captivating as she trace the lives of her characters amidst a changing Naples. -- Paul Rizik, Librarian
