Interview with Dyane Brown, Library Green Thumb

Please introduce yourself. Hello, my name is Dyane Brown. I am a College Clerical Assistant III. I have worked in the library for 24 years.

Where did your interest in plants come from? Growing up we always had plants, and I was responsible for watering them. I found myself at others' house doing their plants.

Where did all the plants in the library come from? The bigger ones came after the remodeling of the library 20 years ago. The medium and smaller ones are clipping from co-workers and purchases over the years.

Which of the plants / trees in the library has been around the longest? The oldest plant would be the fiddle leaf fig [next to the Circulation Desk]. Next would be the snake and the corn plant in the back. They all are over 20 years old.

Do you have a favorite plant in the library? That would be philodendron and ZZ plant that are by my office door [501J] and any plants with color.

Which plant in the library is the most difficult to care for? The most difficult is the pothos. While most say it easy, it becomes too much, gets leggy, yellowing of leaves.

How do you learn / find information about caring for plants? Talking with other plant lovers as well as YouTubing everything about the different variations of plants.

What is your favorite thing about plants / caring for plants? Watching them grow and being about to share cuttings with others. Also, when people start having conversation about the plants.

What advice would you give someone who would like to have plants but is afraid they’ll die? Start with easy plants first. When purchasing ask the florist about your plant before you leave the store. How often to water and how much water to give it, does it need light and the best place to sit it.

Anything else you would like to say about plants in general or about the plants in the library? Everyone needs a plant or twenty. 😊
