In Case of Emergency

In general:

  • Press the Blue Button from any Security telephone to reach the Security Office.
    • The Security phones are located throughout the main building. Emergency Phone Towers are located on the walkways near the parking garage.
  • Call 911 from any CCC telephone.

Library plan for Evacuation:

  • Usher visitors to exit the library and go up the nearest staircase to the nearest building exit and move away from the building (see link below). Close doors and turn off lights on the way if possible.

for Lockdown:

  • Close and lock exterior doors.
  • Turn off lights (if possible).
  • Get everyone away from windows and lines of sight; stay low. Tech Services is an ideal location.
    • For lockdown drills: Take library visitors to the back of the stacks. Instruct anyone using the classroom to stay there, close the door, turn off the lights, and move to the back corner of the room.
  • Remain silent.

for Active Shooter:

  • RUN  |  HIDE  |  FIGHT (see link and video below)

Dealing with Difficult Patrons

Check out this blog post from LibLime: Navigating Uncomfortable Conversations: A Guide for Librarians, which covers common scenarios and strategies for handling difficult situations such as "controversial materials, censorship attempts, privacy concerns, behavioral issues, political disagreements, and misunderstandings about library policies."

Don't forget, Security is always available to assist.
