This is a book that speaks to issues of White flight and the evolution of neighborhoods. While the reviews of the book are not very good, students will find a starting place for considering issues of race, class, and segregation. Avalon Park is named Groveland in the book.

The archives at the Chicago State University library contain a wealth of history about Black Chicagoans and their accomplishments. They have the entry noting First Ladys Michelle Obamas birth, and more. The archivists welcome student researchers interested in black history.

Southeast Environmental Task Force 

Sharing offices with the Calumet Stewardship Initiative at 13300 S. Baltimore Ave., the Southeast Environmental Task Force (setaskforce.org) is concerned with addressing environmental concerns in an industry rich area of Chicago. Specifically, they state that they are an environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the southeast side and south suburbs of Chicago by promoting envirommental education, pollution prevention, and sustainable development.

Located in the Florence Hotel, the Historic Pullman Foundation (www.pullmanil.org ) captures the history of the Pullman neighborhood and the labor movement.  It seeks to preserve the historic value of the Pullman homes.

Located at 13084 S. Doty Ave., down the street from Altgeld Gardens, the Beaubien Woods are run by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. They often serve as a site for environmental efforts to preserve native Illinois plant species.

New Regal Theater nee Avalon Regal Theater 

Located at 1641 E. 79th St., the theater (https://www.avalonregal.com/#has hosted a number of historical and contemporary black celebrities and entertainers. The theater currently can only be toured once a year during the Chicago Architecture Centers event, Open House Chicago; however, student researchers can review the history of the theater virtually and see the structure and the murals on the side of the building.

Veterans Memorial Park 

Located at 2820 E. 98th St., the park was developed both to honor veterans and to serve the South Deering neighborhood according to the Chicago Park District. That said, there is some question as to whether its actual location is in South Deering or South Chicago. Student researchers can use this opportunity to explore other ways that the city honors veterans.

West Pullman Solar Park - Exelon Generation City Solar 

Located at 1201 W. 120th St., the solar plant is identified as the nations largest urban solar power plant.2While student researchers may not walk in the solar park, they can certainly study the utility of a solar power plant and how it serves the city.
